Organic Fruits + Berries with Rodale Institute and Corona Tools

RodaleInstituteBerries resized 600Fruits and berries freshly picked from the garden taste even better when there is no pesticide residue on them! Many small fruits like strawberries produce a heavy yield in a small area. Bush fruits like blueberries and raspberries produce reliably year after year. Dwarf and Columnar fruit trees can also find a place in even the smallest gardens. This week #Plantchat covers growing berries and fruits organically.

Discussion Overview

RodaleInstiteFruitBerriesRaspberries resized 600Organic Growing -Organic fruits and berries can tricky to grow successfully, but it’s worth it!

Most Important - 3 most important things about growing fruits and berries organically?  Compost, compost & compost!

Restore Nature's Balance - Restore balance to natural cycles to reduce pest and weed pressures.  Pesticides and herbicides only disrupt the cycle further.

Integrated Pest Management - IPM is a good first step toward a more environmentally friendly agriculture, but producing organic tree fruits in the Northeast is certainly not impossible. In fact, Rodale Institute has been growing organic apples for more than 30 years.

Relative Pest Populations - In the Northeast, we face twice as many fruit growing diseases as the West Coast. We have more than 60 insect pests to combat, many of which our West Coast friends have never even seen.

San Diego County Water Authority offers educational programs to help build awareness of important water issues. By teaching children about our local water resources, our programs help instill a knowledge and appreciation of this natural resource and foster an understanding of the need to protect our environment and use water wisely. Favorite Fall Plants with Proven Winners and Corona Tools

Posted by Chris Sabbarese on Fri, Sep, 05, 2014 @ 16:09 PM

ScarletBrocadeSedum PW FallWhat are some of your favorite fall-flowering plants? Why is autumn such a good time to plant? Pry yourself away from the latest football game and join us on Twitter for #Plantchat

Plants with several seasons of interest are best, especially for small gardens where every square inch counts! Warm soils mean faster root growth, and late fall soils (after the hot summer sun) have warmer temperatures than in spring (after the cold winter snows and rains). And if your perennial or deciduous ornamental shrub drops its leaves, there is less chance that it will dry out while it is rooting in place. Soils are easier to work in fall, and plants that are planted in the autumn are larger and better grown next spring, having picked up another whole season of growth.

Don't miss some of our fall-flowering or fall-fruiting favorites, such as Scarlet Brocade Sedum or Stonecrop, pictured. Get tips and hints from the team at Proven Winners on #Plantchat!

Discussion Overview

Fall is such a great time in the garden, it would be a shame to  miss the chance to make it as fabulous as summer.

Many plants wait until fall to bloom, providing late season interest

Ornamental interest Several other plants have renewed interest in fall in the form of rebloom, fruit, or foliage

Late Season Fragrance Fall is not thought of as a time for fragrance, but several plants contribute late season fragrance

"Fall is for Planting" Campaign Fall is a great time for planting, with a few notable exceptions

Irrigation at Issue with Lawn and Landscape Magazine + Corona Tools

Posted by Chris Sabbarese on Mon, Sep, 01, 2014 @ 15:09 PM

July2014issueLawnLandscapeMagThe water irrigation issue of the July 2014 Lawn and Landscape Magazine spotlights companies who are making the switch from landscape maintenance to water management. Traditional landscaping services are drying up, while at the same time, other clients want water conservation efforts and they’re willing to pay for them. The market is there and it makes sense to make the transition in order to stay in business.

Services such as subsurface drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting can have margins of 30 percent, an attractive incentive to go with the flow.

Joint the discussion of options on this week's #Landscapechat  on Twitter.

Join @CoronaTools and partner Lawn and Landscape Magazine Brian Horn @LawnLandscape for #Landscapechat on Wednesday, September 3 at 11 a.m. P.T.or 2 p.m. ET. This is the Twitter chat where we come together with green industry experts and fellow landscape tweeps, each week to discuss all things related to landscape, since 2011.

Discussion Overview

Editor Chuck Bowen asked "some of the smartest water people I know just what water means for the landscape industry now and in the future."

Demands from the West Vast reserves of freshwater that sit just north of his home state of Ohio are under constant threat of being trucked or sucked west.

Three Case Studies:

Enviroscape in Calif. shifted the focus of his company from traditional landscaping to water management and now approximately half of his revenue comes from such services as subsurface drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting.

Lambert’s in Texas installed a 20,000-gallon cistern to catch the water pouring off the roof. It uses that water – instead of the city’s – to mix its fertilizer blends, saving approximately $800 a month.

Garden Works in Calif., includes water management as part of every client contract. Creating the water management program, training staff and earning certifications took about seven years to implement company-wide.
